About David Wenham

David Wenham is an Australian actor best known for playing Faramir, the younger son of Denethor and brother to Boromir, in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, bringing quiet strength and moral complexity to a character whose loyalty to his family is repeatedly tested across The Two Towers and The Return of the King.

Wenham also played Carl, the resourceful monastic friar and gadget-maker who accompanies Hugh Jackman’s title monster hunter, in the 2004 action-horror film Van Helsing, providing much of the film’s comic relief amid its battles against Dracula, Frankenstein’s monster, and the Wolf Man.

Beyond these roles, Wenham narrated 300, Zack Snyder’s stylised 2006 adaptation of the Battle of Thermopylae, playing the storyteller Dilios, whose account of the Spartans’ last stand frames the entire film. His distinctive voice and measured delivery in 300 became an integral part of the film’s larger-than-life visual and narrative style. Wenham has built a substantial career in Australian and international film and television, including a leading role in the long-running Australian series SeaChange.

His combination of roles across three major franchise properties has made him a respected and recognisable figure among fans of Middle-earth, 300, and Van Helsing alike, and a popular guest at conventions celebrating all three.
