John Rhys-Davies is a Welsh actor whose career spans decades of major studio filmmaking and beloved franchise work. He played Sallah, the loyal Egyptian excavator and ally to Indiana Jones, in Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade, becoming one of the franchise’s most beloved supporting characters across two of its most celebrated instalments.
Rhys-Davies achieved further international fame playing Gimli, the gruff but big-hearted Dwarf warrior, in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, providing much of the trilogy’s comic relief alongside genuine warrior heroism, and also voicing the character of Treebeard the Ent in The Two Towers.
