Indiana Jones was created by George Lucas and brought to the screen by director Steven Spielberg, with a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan, beginning with Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981. The series expanded across five films spanning more than four decades: the prequel Temple of Doom (1984), The Last Crusade (1989), which introduced Sean Connery as Indy’s father, Henry Jones Sr., Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008), released nineteen years after the previous instalment, and Dial of Destiny (2023), Harrison Ford’s final outing in the role, which used de-ageing technology to bring a younger version of Indy to the screen for its opening sequence. Across its run, the franchise has grossed well over $2 billion worldwide and remains one of the most fondly regarded adventure series in film history, prized as much for its practical stunt work and globe-trotting locations as for its central hero.
Harrison Ford’s performance as Indiana Jones stands alongside his role as Han Solo as one of the defining screen heroes of his generation, built on equal parts wit, vulnerability, and sheer physical grit. Karen Allen’s Marion Ravenwood and Sean Connery’s Henry Jones Sr. remain among the series’ most beloved supporting turns, but few characters are held in as much affection as John Rhys-Davies’ Sallah, Indy’s loyal Egyptian excavator and friend, who appeared in both Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade and brought a warmth and humour that balanced out the series’ darker Nazi-hunting plots, becoming a fan favourite despite a relatively limited amount of screen time across the saga.
Indiana Jones’ influence on the adventure genre is difficult to overstate, shaping everything from the Uncharted video game series to National Treasure and countless other treasure-hunting stories that followed in its wake. John Williams’ score and the character’s fedora-and-whip silhouette remain instantly recognisable worldwide, and the franchise continues to draw crowds decades on through theme park attractions — including long-running rides at Disney parks — and an enduringly active collector market for props, prints, and signed memorabilia tied to its cast.
