Harry Potter began as a series of seven novels written by J.K. Rowling, published between 1997 and 2007, following Harry Potter’s journey from an unassuming boy on Privet Drive to a fully trained wizard at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. With more than 500 million copies sold worldwide, the books rank among the bestselling series in publishing history, and introduced an entire lexicon — Muggles, Quidditch, He Who Must Not Be Named — that has since embedded itself firmly in everyday culture.
Warner Bros. adapted the novels into eight films released between 2001 and 2011, remarkably retaining its core trio of young leads across the full decade of production, a rare achievement for any franchise built around child actors. The films collectively grossed well over $7.7 billion at the time of their release, making the series one of the highest-grossing film franchises ever produced. Warner Bros. later expanded the Wizarding World further with the Fantastic Beasts prequel trilogy (2016–2022), following magizoologist Newt Scamander through 1920s wizarding society and tying back into the mythology of the original saga, though the later instalments in that trilogy struggled to match the box office and critical reception of the original series.
Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint led the films as Harry, Hermione, and Ron, but the saga’s depth of casting was just as central to its charm. James and Oliver Phelps took the memorable — and genuinely fitting — casting of real-life twins as Fred and George Weasley, Miriam Margolyes brought Professor Sprout to life in the Herbology greenhouses, and Stanislav Yanevski played Triwizard champion Viktor Krum in Goblet of Fire. Hugh Mitchell appeared throughout the early films as Colin Creevey, Harry’s Muggle-born, camera-toting admirer. They joined a supporting cast including Robbie Coltrane’s Hagrid, Alan Rickman’s Snape, Maggie Smith’s McGonagall, and Ralph Fiennes’ Voldemort, several of whom delivered some of the most quoted performances in the franchise.
Harry Potter’s cultural footprint now stretches well beyond books and films, spanning Wizarding World theme parks in Orlando, Hollywood, Tokyo, and Beijing, the West End and Broadway stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and one of the largest fan convention and collecting communities of any franchise. The saga is entering an entirely new chapter with HBO’s Harry Potter television series, adapting the novels book by book over what’s planned as ten consecutive years, with its first season premiering Christmas 2026 and a second season, adapting Chamber of Secrets, already confirmed. Interest in the original film cast has surged again as the franchise re enters the spotlight.
