Tania Rodger is a New Zealand Weta Workshop manager and makeup artist who co-founded the studio alongside Richard Taylor in 1987, playing a foundational role in building one of the world’s most respected special effects and prop-making companies. Beyond her extensive management responsibilities, including health and safety, materials importation, and overseeing the workshop’s day-to-day operations, Rodger specialised in running the Foam Latex Department and producing creature and human eye replicas used throughout Weta Workshop’s puppet and prosthetic work.
Her contributions span Weta Workshop’s earliest projects, including Braindead, through to Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, King Kong, District 9, The Adventures of Tintin, and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, in which she also made a brief on-screen appearance as a Hobbit Mother.
Rodger’s role as a co-founder and long-serving manager of Weta Workshop places her among the most significant behind-the-scenes figures in the studio’s history, having helped build the infrastructure and expertise that would go on to win multiple Academy Awards.
Her contribution to Middle-earth’s realisation, though largely unseen on screen, has made her a respected figure among those interested in the full scope of talent behind the trilogy’s success.
