About Joel Tobeck

Joel Tobeck is a New Zealand actor with a career spanning more than four decades across film, television, and theatre. He played Guritz, an Orc lieutenant during the siege of Minas Tirith and the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, contributing to the trilogy’s depiction of one of Middle-earth’s most significant battles.

Tobeck built extensive recognition within New Zealand television prior to his role in the trilogy, appearing regularly across the country’s genre television productions including Xena: Warrior Princess, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, and Young Hercules, series that helped establish New Zealand as a hub for internationally distributed genre television during the 1990s.

His film career has continued to span decades since, including roles in 30 Days of Night, Boy, and Mortal Engines, alongside more recent New Zealand features. Tobeck’s combination of a memorable supporting role in one of cinema’s most successful fantasy trilogies and decades of steady work across New Zealand’s genre television industry has made him one of the country’s most respected and internationally recognised character actors, and a notable figure among Lord of the Rings collectors.
