Jurassic Park began as a 1990 novel by Michael Crichton, imagining a theme park populated by dinosaurs cloned from DNA preserved in fossilised amber. Steven Spielberg adapted the book into the 1993 film of the same name, combining Stan Winston’s groundbreaking animatronic creatures with pioneering computer-generated imagery from Industrial Light & Magic to bring dinosaurs to the screen with a realism audiences had never seen before. The result redefined what was possible in blockbuster filmmaking and remains one of the most influential effects films ever made.
The franchise expanded through The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) and Jurassic Park III (2001), before Jurassic World (2015) relaunched the series for a new generation, followed by Fallen Kingdom (2018) and Dominion (2022), which brought the original and new casts together on screen for the first time. A further instalment, Jurassic World Rebirth, arrived in 2025, keeping the franchise in continuous production more than three decades after the original film. Across its six films to date, the series has grossed close to $6 billion worldwide, making it one of the highest-earning franchises in cinema history, and one of very few to remain commercially dominant across three full decades.
Sam Neill’s Dr Alan Grant and Laura Dern’s Dr Ellie Sattler anchored the original film alongside Jeff Goldblum’s scene-stealing turn as chaos theorist Dr Ian Malcolm, a performance that turned Goldblum into one of the era’s most quotable stars. Sir Richard Attenborough brought warmth and gravitas to park founder John Hammond, in one of the most beloved roles of his later career. The film’s child leads, Joseph Mazzello and Ariana Richards as Hammond’s grandchildren Tim and Lex, became formative figures for a generation of young viewers who grew up alongside the franchise.
John Williams’ score and the film’s ‘Welcome to Jurassic Park’ imagery remain instantly recognisable more than thirty years on, and the franchise’s merchandising empire, from toy dinosaurs to theme park attractions, has rarely slowed. Interest in the original 1993 cast in particular has grown steadily as the millennial generation who grew up with the film has reached an age where nostalgia-driven collecting has become a genuine priority, with continued new instalments like Rebirth keeping the property firmly in the cultural conversation. Practical dinosaur effects and animatronics from the original trilogy are also increasingly celebrated in their own right, as appreciation for pre-CGI filmmaking craft continues to grow among collectors.
