Breaking Bad was created by Vince Gilligan and premiered on AMC in 2008, following high school chemistry teacher Walter White after he’s diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and turns to manufacturing crystal methamphetamine to secure his family’s financial future. Partnering with former student Jesse Pinkman, Walter’s transformation from sympathetic, underpaid teacher into the ruthless, calculating drug kingpin known as ‘Heisenberg’ became one of television’s most closely studied character arcs, built on Gilligan’s own pitch for the show: to turn Mr Chips into Scarface.
Running for five seasons until 2013, Breaking Bad is now near-universally regarded as one of the greatest television dramas ever made, and for years held the Guinness World Record for the highest-rated TV series on IMDb. Its cast collected an extraordinary run of major awards, including four Lead Actor Emmys for Bryan Cranston and three Supporting Actor wins for Aaron Paul, alongside two further Emmys for Anna Gunn. The show’s legacy has continued to expand since its finale, spawning the acclaimed prequel spin-off Better Call Saul (2015–2022), following Saul Goodman’s transformation from small-time lawyer Jimmy McGill, and the 2019 film El Camino, which picked up Jesse Pinkman’s story in the immediate aftermath of the series finale. Together, the two shows form one of the most consistently acclaimed extended
universes in television history.
Bryan Cranston’s Walter White and Aaron Paul’s Jesse Pinkman carried the show’s central partnership, supported by Anna Gunn as Walt’s wife Skyler and Giancarlo Esposito’s widely acclaimed turn as the icily controlled drug lord Gus Fring. Dean Norris played Hank Schrader, Walt’s DEA agent brother-in-law, whose loud, larger-than life personality masked genuine investigative instincts that put him on Heisenberg’s trail for much of the series — a role that became one of the show’s most beloved for its mix of comic relief and real tragedy as the story unfolded. Betsy Brandt’s Marie Schrader, RJ Mitte’s Walt Jr., and Bob Odenkirk’s Saul Goodman rounded out a cast that has since produced two further hit series of its own.
Breaking Bad’s cultural footprint extends well beyond its original run, from the ‘Los Pollos Hermanos’ restaurant chain that became a genuine pop-culture reference point to the Albuquerque filming locations that continue to draw fans on dedicated tourist trails years after the show ended, including guided RV tours retracing key filming spots. Its blue-tinted rock candy, hazmat suits, and RV have become instantly recognisable props among collectors, and the extended Breaking Bad universe — spanning two spin-off properties and a feature film — continues to draw new viewers through streaming, keeping demand for cast signings and memorabilia consistently strong.
